Hi all, I'm sure you're all tired by know seeing all of the "save Derpy"-esque posts, the debate, all the kerfuffle, so I promise to make this quick.
In fact, the point of this is to perhaps calm the situation down a bit. You see, the whole situation has been fueled by a lot of misunderstandings and a lot of panicking.
All I want to to is put things in perspective a bit and clear up a few things:
1. Apple did not make the change.
We all like to rib on Apple when it does something wrong, but the idea that they would or even could alter one episode is patently ridiculous. To quote a new friend of mine:
[If Apple made the change] They would be breaking just about every publisher's rule in existence, up to and including violating the US Constitution itself.
[...] They are the distributor, they just take the sales commission and don't give a dam (sic) about the content. They almost certainly don't even have the capacity to screen every episode. [...] If someone gets mad at MLP for having Derpy, Apple will be the last one that would get in trouble. The ones in trouble of getting sued would be Studio B, the Hub, Hasbro, and the FCC at the government level.
[...] Apple is entirely removed from situation here, suggesting Apple is worried about getting sued because of Derpy would be like saying a tire salesman is going to get sued when a drunk driver using those tires gets so drunk he drives his car off a cliff and kills himself.
It should be noted that Apple has taken down material that they have found to be unsuitable such as an app for "Karma Sutra", but this is in the case of extremes such as pornography or sexual content and is usually pulled, not requested to be edited. Point being that the burden of proof lies on the accuser and there is little to no evidence that Apple would make such a small alteration given their scale.
When you realize how little Apple cares about editing material from Dexter or Weeds you'll see how little water the idea they'd edit the scene holds.
2. Derpy's eye's aren't "fixed"
Many people are crying foul, saying that Hasbro has "fixed" Derpy's crossed eyes and are sending the message that children with crossed eyes shouldn't be represented or aren't normal. Not only is this an exaggeration, but it's patently untrue. Derpy's eyes are quite noticeably crossed and it's apparent through the video as well.
Now it is obvious that in some frames they've lessened the exaggeration slightly they eyes are still very clearly crossed, which is important, as they could have just as easily "fixed" them entirely.
3. Hasbro didn't change the voice because of controversy
Or at least they have another valid reason that has nothing to do with that.
Original voice actress Tabitha St. Germain recorded her lines mistakenly believing that Derpy was male. We even had someone post about the whole thing earlier right here on Reddit after they e-mailed the actress.
All they did was re-record the lines to be in their proper feminine. So far, this change has been the one that's best received, so I won't dwell on it.
4. There's an unfortunate problem with "derpy"
You see, to us who have formed all of this backstory and context for the character, The Last Roundup's opening line is understood as "Careful, Derpy", but that's not the case for the average passerby. To someone without the knowledge we've made for ourselves, the line is "Careful, derpy", causing the unfortunate but completely rational belief that Rainbow Dash is calling this character retarded.
This unfortunate context is worsened by Rainbow's short and sarcastic behavior with Derpy, even to the extent of yelling at the character. This is also unfortunately coupled with the fact that Derpy is portrayed as being an oblivious burden on the whole town. If you are under the assumption that this character is being called retarded, the whole scene gains a much less light context, and becomes legitimately offensive.
4.5. There's another unfortunate problem with "derpy"
The words "derp" and "derpy" are under the loose legal ownership by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who not only created the word in their 1998 film Baseketball, but have been the predominant mainstream users of the word since then.
Normally this would not be enough for them to take legal action, however their character Mr. Derp falls under the laws of intellectual property and can easily spur Viacom into taking legal action against Hasbro.
This risk is possibly slim, but any risk is an unnecessary one in such a small instance as this, and is one that Hasbro is certainly prone to decline on pushing.
5. There's no reason to think the upcoming Fluttershy episode is being delayed so as to retroactively remove a bigger role for Derpy
This is completely unsubstantiated rumor. We have no reason to believe that there ever was such a planned role for Derpy, and absolutely no evidence to think that they would remove Derpy from it.
In fact, a MLP animator has gone on record stating that they have no intent on removing Derpy's character at all.
Further, Hasbro could have easily done a pallette swap on Derpy, slapped on a new cutie mark and called her Normalia, but they didn't. They kept the character design looking just as "derpy" as previous appearances and merely removed one word of dialogue and re-recorded some mistaken lines. If they wanted Derpy gone, believe me, she would be gone.
All in all, I just want to thank those of you who kept a level head about this and ask that the remainder of you put down your pitchforks for a second and take a deep breath. There's no call for all this hullabaloo and it only succeeds in making us all seem panicky and trigger-fingered.
Ultimately the change was minor and inconsequential, and it certainly isn't something to lose our heads over or worse, start blaming people for.
tl;dr: Most of the hub-bub about Derpy's false or exaggerated. Everything's going to be fine, let's all chill out.
EDIT: A Gawker article has come out and released the quotes of a Harbro PR that:
"The 'My Little Pony Friendship is Magic' series has always been about acceptance and inclusion, and the series strives to convey that through the playful antics of a diverse cast of characters," Hasbro spokeswoman Nicole Angello told us over email. "Some viewers felt that aspects of the episode 'The Last Roundup' did not stay true to the core message of friendship which is the heart and soul of the series. Hasbro Studios decided to make slight audio alterations to this single episode."
I'll also note that many at Hasbro received death threats and other general disparaging hate mail sent to them. I'm sure most of you would never do such a thing, but to that small, small percentage that did... for shame.
